The Rain Can’t Reach Me Here

I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who genuinely hates the rain. Not the chaotic, sideways kind that ruins your shoes and your spirit – but the good kind. The soft, steady kind. The one that makes everything feel slower and safer. The kind you listen to from the couch, wrapped in a blanket, sipping something warm, maybe beside someone you love. Or your dog. Or just yourself, finally.

But what is it about that kind of rain that we love so much?

Here’s my theory. It comes down to two – okay, maybe three – reasons.

First: we feel like we’ve won. We’re inside. Dry. The rain can’t touch us. We’ve escaped the chaos and landed somewhere warm. And that little win? That’s not nothing. Especially when your life lately has felt like running from one storm just to get caught in another.

Second: safety. Real safety. Not just “my door’s locked” safety – but emotional, bone-deep stillness. That rare moment where nothing is expected of you. No pretending. No surviving. Just you and the rain – and the realization that, for once, nothing needs fixing.

And the third? Rain resets things. Literally. It rinses the world. Clears the air. Makes everything smell a little newer. Cleaner. It’s not hard to imagine it doing the same for us – washing away whatever’s been clinging too tightly. Regret. Guilt. Yesterday..

So yeah, I tricked you. This isn’t just about rain.

It’s about what you feel when it rains. Or more honestly, what you let yourself feel when everything else finally quiets down.

And if you’re up for it, next time the sky gets soft and grey, maybe ask yourself:

  1. Do I feel like I’m actually winning right now or just avoiding the storm?
  2. Do I feel safe or just distracted enough to ignore what isn’t?
  3. What am I quietly running from – and is it still chasing me?

You don’t need the answers now. You don’t need to answer at all. But if those questions sit with you – if they make you shift in your seat a little – it might be worth listening to whatever shows up.

And if all you can do right now is sip your drink and stare at the rain? That’s enough too.

Stay warm, Sugars.
Sometimes survival looks exactly like this.
